MS Stubnitz at Canary Wharf:

In Jan 2013 legendary cold war relic and culture ark MS Stubnitz moored in Canary Wharf and presented an eclectic program of arts and events until its departure for Dunkirk May 2013.

Eighty meters in length, and weighing in at over 2500 tons, the Stubnitz is a cultural heavy-hitter in more ways than one - she has played host to many big names in the world of arts and music as well as documenting decades of European counter-culture.

The ship has a strong legacy of programming exciting and innovative music with acts as diverse as Grandmaster Flash and Rammstein having performed on board.

MS Stubnitz is also a unique piece of European maritime history. One of the oldest seagoing vessels of her tonnage, the ship is a fully functioning authentic example of mid-century engineering.

20 years ago the registered charity "Motorschiff Stubnitz e.V." took over the ship and repurposed its cargo holds to form several performance venues creating a travelling centre for arts and culture. Since then the Stubnitz has toured 10 Northern European countries presenting arts and music in 20 different harbours. In her life as an intercultural hub she has played host to over 570.000 visitors

MS Stubnitz is crewed by a loose-knit collective of 10-15 artists and engineers, hailing from many European countries, who draw on diverse skills and experiences in order to keep the vessel afloat – both artistically and literally. She is captained by Urs 'Blo' Blaser, instigator and founding member of the Stubnitz project. Artistic programming and liaison for the Canary Wharf season was by Aste Amundsen

Our season at Canary Wharf included ground breaking contemporary circus, avant garde fashion, maker culture, sonic arts, automatons, kinetic art, indi-gaming, interactive theatre, film and music.

Featuring events by: Kinetica Arts Fair, EMW (London Hackspace), Algorave, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, The Wild Rumpus, Bit-Of-Alright, Hydroacustic and London Music Hackspace -among many others.
